I’ve moved my blog

For those who visit me by typing the domain funfitchic.net, you have nothing to worry about. I’ve moved from wordpress.com to wordpress.org and am now self-hosted. You’ll see a slight difference, but nothing too crazy.

This is all very new and scary to me but I’m relying on Google searches and WordPress guides to help me through. Anyone who has subscribed to this blog via the email subscription or is following me on a feed, please take note:

In order to receive email subscriptions of my blog – you will now have to go sign up my visiting funfitchic.net and entering your email address on the right side bar under “Subscribe”

If you are looking for my feed – it’s here:
feed://feeds.feedburner.com/FunFitChic

All the posts were moved over and the site pretty much looks the same. Within the week, I will close my WordPress.com account. In the long run, this move will be better for ALL OF US.  Being self-hosted allows me more opportunity to access my site stats better, analyze the site, work on page rankings, seo stuff, etc. etc.

Navigation Changes

I’ve been keeping track of my site stats and I’ve noticed that some people drop by this lil blog due to specific Google searches: topics that are of interest to them that I just happened to have written a post about.

So, to make it easier for visitors: I’ve created a little drop down that categorizes posts beyond Fun, Fit, or Chic in the top menu bar.

Fun, Fit, Chic is descriptive but sometimes not enough

Posts are filed under categories such as, running, food, zumba, fit chicas, etc. You can find it over on the right of the blog. Looks like this:

Hope this helps!

I’ll update this page as more changes are made.

Happy Friday Homies!

Get out and get some sun this weekend but not before checking out Fog and Smog Films’ music video, Whole Foods Parking Lot.

Lyrics:

Intro (spoken)

Yo man…
Yo I know you see me here dude!!
I’ve been waiting here like 10 minutes, man!
No, no no… this is MY parking space man.
What you need to do is put your little hybrid in reverse,
And go out the way you came in.
WHAT?!?!
Yo its about to get REAL in the Whole Foods parking lot man…

Chorus (with feeling)

It’s getting’ REAL in the Whole Foods Parking Lot
I got my STEEL and you know it gets sparked a lot
Im on my grind homie… It’s on my mind homie!
These fools with clip boards are lookin’ at me like they know me!

It’s getting’ REAL in the Whole Foods Parking Lot
You know the DEAL with the little shopping carts they got…
Check out what I say, it happens every day…
It’s how we LIVE on the west side of LA!!

Verse 1

… Im ridin’ slow in my Prius…
all leather, tinted windows… you cant see us!!
Everybody’s trying to park, you can feel the tension
I’m in electric mode… can’t even hear the engine (Shhhhhhh)

Just then I saw a spot open up,
My timings perfect… Im creepin’ up…
But then this other dude tried to steal it going the wrong way
Yo man, I’ve had a LONG DAY!

Chorus
(same as before)

Verse 2

Now I’m on this inside, looking at my list
Organic chicken, Kale Salad and a Lemon Twist.
Some girl in yoga pants is lookin at me funny
I’m just trying to find a decent Pinot Noir for under twenty!

Then I take it to the cheese counter, Humboldt Fog?
We just ran out sir! Really Dog?
Take it easy man, I try to calm myself…
I’ve been on edge ever since they took Kombucha off the shelf…

Chorus

(same as before)

Verse 3

This Busters on his iPhone talking to his friends,
Picking up some cayenne pepper for his master cleanse.
You’re the most annoying dude I’ve ever SEEN brah…
Could you PLEASE move? You’re RIGHT in front of the Quinoa.

Damn, I’m about to check out.
Pay my 80 bucks for 6 things and get the heck out.
The express lane is moving hella slow…
Man, these fools don’t know… that shit is getting REAL….

Chorus
(same as before)

A fit chica tells her story v.8

Here we are on the eighth version of fit chica friday and I’ve realized that I’ve yet to share the amount of details that the women on these posts have shared, and this is my blog. I’ve decided that this week, I’d answer my own questions – and give you a little peek as to who I am and why I choose to lead a health conscious lifestyle.

First off, tell us about yourself.

That's me.

My name is Melissa. I was born and raised in the Bronx. I wasn’t always so interested in a healthy life . . . dinner to me was once ice cream and cookies; well just because its what I was in the mood for. I love to dance, sweat, and test my limits. I enjoy any opportunity to be near the water – whether its sitting by the Hudson River or going on vacation. Something about the ocean brings me peace and makes me feel alive.

The Indian Ocean in Tanzania, Africa

What gave you the motivation to take working out and fitness seriously?  Was there a catalyst?

As a kid, my calorie burning activities consisted of dance

I still love to dance.

classes. I was a student of Ballet for many years. Up until my Junior Year in High School, I attended Ballet classes non-stop. In hindsight, I realize that it was my form of exercise – as a kid ….it was just fun.

My senior year in High School, I took my VERY first aerobics class. I hated gym class. I hated the competitive aspect, the running, everything. So I signed up for an aerobics class and I LOVED it. It was like dance but different. I think that class laid the foundation for “the future me” to seek aerobics instruction as a part-time job.

Once I graduated High School, I attended Pace University. At the time, there was no fitness center and unless you were an athlete or had a car, the opportunity to workout was not very easy. I silently struggled with knowing what to eat. Sometimes I would choose not to eat at all. Once I stopped caring as much, I was 145 lbs. I’m short (5′ 3″) and small so that makes a difference. I sit comfortably at 125 lbs now. Use your imagination and math skills.

Luckily, at the same time I realized the weight was on and I was wearing a size 7 or 9 in jeans (I am a 4 now), the fitness center at Pace opened. I’m an extremely self-motivated person and being in a place where everyone else was just like me, made it that much easier.  I joined the gym and found empowerment and self-confidence in working out. It became a routine that helped me overcome stress, make new friends, and shed some extra weight. I haven’t stopped since.

Have you changed your eating habits? If so, what’s different?

My eating habits are so different. When I first started living on my own, my food choices sucked … chicken fingers and french fries everyday. As I started becoming more aware of myself and how food made me feel, things started changing but it’s still very much a work in progress. I grew up in a household where carbs were the main meal – sometimes serving white rice AND spaghetti on the same dish, the same day. I love carbs and I love sweets. I wasn’t introduced to vegetables until I became older and chose to eat them. Yes, we had beans but when I was younger, I never ate them. I don’t recall ever eating any vegetables as a kid . . . perhaps corn and potato. It’s been a long journey with food and learning what’s good and what isn’t. I’m not done yet. The most exciting part is trying new things. Believe me, I still get that “eww, its green – it must taste weird” thought go through my head when I choose to venture into trying a new vegetable but I go for it anyway. This year I finally introduced fish to my diet. THIS YEAR. Can you believe that? With the Internet, you can find healthy and tasty recipes that can help you live a healthier life without compromise. That was my experience with Kale. I expected complete disgust until I decided to try a recipe for it and voila . . . I now love it.

How do you feel fitness has changed your life?

After teaching a Master Class with my Z8 Fitness crew

Fitness has CHANGED ME. It’s changed who I associate with, what I do everyday and how I feel about myself. Due to being a sick child, I always thought of myself as a weak person, someone who needed people to take care of them. I believed there were things “I couldn’t do.” It’s no ones fault – my experiences made me feel that way. Working out has given me confidence I never thought I could have. It feels good to say, “I did 15 pushups today because I could, because I built up to it.” I’ve learned that you can accomplish anything if you take it step by step. It’s also improved my leadership skills and focus. After deciding I would teach my own aerobics class, and becoming certified in Zumba, I’ve seen a new me emerge – a leader – a person who wants to help others take their lives into their own hands. It’s amazing.

Any tips for someone who may feel overwhelmed by the idea of changing one’s lifestyle?

It’s a task like any other. It’s been 10 years for me and I’m still learning. You need to commit to yourself to start. Always start slow. If you want to add more vegetables to your diet, begin by introducing some of the more common ones slowly into your lunch or dinner plate. Don’t do a complete overhaul or else you will overwhelm yourself. Add some broccoli, and then some carrots perhaps once a week to start off and then make it more frequent. It’s a necessity for me to have vegetables with every meal but I had to build myself to get there.

I can rock climb too! ;-)

When it comes to fitness, it’s the same story. You need to lay the foundation. You can’t expect to get to the gym – do an hour of cardio, lift weights, do crunches … etc etc. and not feel the horrible soreness the next day. It’s also not healthy to do that. Many trainers say two hours at the gym is too long. I say two hours at the gym is too long if you are new to the game. Some people love the gym and spend more time there but they know what they’re doing (I hope) and if that’s theit happy place – then go for it. As a beginner, take it easy . . . find something you love and do it often. You will see results and start looking for more things, just because.

Currently, what’s your favorite workout? Why?

Dare I say it? KICKBOXING. I just started taking Kickboxing lessons at Grandmaster Kim’s and I love it. The instructor is great. He pushes me and takes advantage of the entire hour. And of course, I LOVE ZUMBA.

Teaching Zumba

How do you incorporate fitness in your everyday life?

When I plan my days, I think, “when can I find time to workout?” I don’t believe in lifting everyday, doing cardio everyday, etc. I do what I want, when I want. There is some method to my madness – but for me its no longer “will I workout,” it’s “how (or when) will I workout.” It’s a priority for me and I fit it into my schedule whether I have to wake up in the morning to do it, take a lunch break at work, or find time after work.

Anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

Without sharing too much about my family, I have many family members with some serious diseases, that in my eyes can be maintained with a healthier lifestyle. Blood lines run deep, and while I was in college, I realized that I needed to take control of my lifestyle or else I too could fall victim to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity etc. When I first started working out, many people thought I was crazy. I heard things like, “you are skinny, you don’t need to” or “that’s for bodybuilders, do you want those man muscles?” Not everyone will support your decision to say no to that chocolate cake or to skip happy hour because you are going to the gym, but in the long run, it’s up to you to decide what’s better for you.

You can control your health so go for it and if you need help . . . just ask me! Many of you were once active – perhaps you played a sport as a kid. Bring that inner child out to play with some exercise! Get ready to feel life and feel fabulous.

Almond Butter vs. Peanut Butter

This year for Lent, I gave up Chocolate. I was obsessing over dark chocolate and I just needed to say goodbye for awhile. During those 40 days, I found a new obsession . . . Peanut Butter – my best friend.

After going through tons and tons and I MEAN TONS of Peanut Butter, I had to say goodbye and I pretty much consumed no peanut butter anything for two months (maybe even longer). Two weeks ago, at Fairway, I met Almond Butter. I’ve heard a lot about Almond Butter and I thought, “let me give it a try.” YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMY

I now have a third best friend in the food pantry. So, what are your thoughts? Almond Butter or Peanut Butter? I won’t even throw chocolate in the mix because hands down it’s THE BEST.

Motivated, Happy, and Ready to rock.

Although not nearly as exciting as Memorial Day weekend, Labor Day weekend is here and I am excited to have Monday off. Woo hoo!

This weekend, I’ll be attending a good friend’s wedding, hanging with some long lost girlfriends at the Beer Garden and relaxing. Perhaps, a night at the New York Salsa Congress, hmmm. . . .that’s a thought.

Anyway, I’d like to add that I’m on Week 6 of my Couch to 5k training. The biggest difference I noticed today was the lack of hesitation to start my run. When I first started the program, I would find myself thinking too much. After the 5 minute warm-up I’d say things like “well this is a slight hill, I’ll walk a little more until I get to the top” or “maybe I should stretch a little more” or even, “this song is almost over, I might as well start once the other song begins.” Silly, I know BUT true. Today was different. I woke up, drank my water, warmed up and got right to it. No excuses. No hesitations. Just me and my feet.

On Tuesday, I ran on the track because there were too many branches and wet leaves all over the sidewalks due to Irene but today I went back to running on pavement and it was awesome. There’s benefit to both. Aside from the obvious (support of a track vs. pavement), I noticed that when I run on the track, I am motivated by the High School Soccer and Lacrosse teams that are practicing. The girl’s track team is out there running sprints and its nice to be around active adults and children. On the streets though, my motivation is different. I’d like to think that I am motivating someone else to take up running, walking or any other form of exercise. I see a lot of people that are struggling to walk to the train station – many of these people are young and out of breath. I do hope that my will to get out there and go for a run in the morning will motivate someone else to get moving.

On that note, I’ve decided to apply to the New York Road Runners, Team for Kids. One of my readers commented on a post and recommended that I look into it. I think its perfect for me. A group of adults working to help children in the city build a healthier life. Due to my 9-5, I can’t participate in the after school activities but I can be “a buddy” to a child who is running a race. It sounds awesome. I’ll also start working on fundraising activities for the group as well. But thats in the near future. I need to get accepted first.

Feeling motivated, happy, and ready to take over the world!

Obesity: A National Emergency?

According to this report, by the year 2030 half of U.S. Adults will be obese. If American adults and children continue down the same track – our country will have extremely high incidences of obesity which inevitably results in diabetes, asthma, heart attacks, etc.

Modern medicine will continue battling the many diseases that one obese adult is at risk to while insurance companies, pharmaceuticals, etc. etc., make money and profit.

If you haven’t guessed it . . . this really pisses me off.

The report also recommends government policy to regulate health food costs, food production, and marketing of foods. Yes, all these things need to change but do WE really need the government to make these changes. Why can’t the American people decide that they won’t eat the junk that’s on the shelves? Why can’t WE decide that we will no longer feed ourselves or our children fast foods? Why can’t WE decide that we will have home cooked meals as a family? Meals that are chosen with thought and consideration for the health of our loved ones.

The obesity issue is very dear to my heart and I feel for people who are obese due to a sickness – mental or physical, or medical side affects. I WANT TO HELP. I know many people who didn’t grow up with the knowledge of what is healthy and what isn’t. I am one of those people. Instead of government control of everything, why don’t we allocate more money to the organizations that are trying to educate people and help them get out of the cycle they are in?

Some healthy foods ARE expensive but buying fruits and vegetables that are in season curbs the cost a lot. They also keep you full LONGER. Eating a well rounded meal will hold you down much longer than buying a $5 lunch at McDonalds. TRUST ME ON THAT. There are so many ways a person can take control of their health ON THEIR OWN without intervention of government. Without “the powers that be” controlling things and in turn fueling big business. It’s YOUR health that is at stake. YOUR LIFE.  The life of YOUR children, do you really want it in the hands of government officials?

Weigh in please.

Trader Joe’s Rocks

As a kid, I loved waking up on Sunday mornings, going to church and then going grocery shopping with my father. He is an artist at this stuff. He knew when we were running low on our groceries, whether we were able to splurge on some things, what produce and meat was good and ready to eat, what was in season and etc. I learned so much walking through the supermarket with him. Our supermarket was small and had a neighborhood feel to it. I found comfort in that

Now, picture this: Me, living on my own and walking into a MEGA 24/hour Stop and Shop all by myself. {insert horror music} SHRIEK.

I can’t handle large supermarkets. They are ridiculous and NEVER have what I need but ALWAYS have what I don’t. They frighten me and for years I resorted to Peapod and FreshDirect for my groceries. I highly recommend both delivery services – btw. Lately, I’ve become much more interested in picking out my own foods and planning my meals. When I was unemployed, I had a lot of time to go food shopping and one lucky day, I FOUND TRADER JOE’s.

It’s small. It has a neighborhood feel and has EXACTLY what I need. I like to think that it has everything thats in the perimeter of a supermarket without all the junk in between (all the aisles full of soda, cookies, spam, etc).

I found an article, written in 2010 by Fortune about the success of Trader Joe’s and felt compelled to share. Check it out here.
